Being the true sonic terrorists, PARADE OF THE LIFELESS (named after a song of the same title by grindcore legends Assück) love nothing more than breaking the boundaries of extreme music. It would be a rather pointless activity trying to classify a band such as this, but for those who still need labels, the easiest thing would be to place them in a metalcore, or rather noisecore category. POTL continue in the tradition of radical metalcore extremists like Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, Botch, Coalesce but attempt to take it even further. On the course of about thirty minutes they manage to deftly combine calculated chaos and mathematical complexity of the above mentioned bands with mellow jazz and acoustic breaks, punishing noise freakouts, and insane grindcore excursions. As you can imagine, the end result constitutes a very intense, disturbing and challenging experience.

The cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Wind Cries Mary" as well as the usage of exotic instruments such as Kenyan guitar and Ghilakid (whatever the hell that is) further emphasize seriousness of the band's intentions.

Lyrically, POTL proficiently tackle subjects of existential and socially conscious variety, which fit their musical canvas just fine. With such uncompromising levels of depth, chaos, complexity and brutality, this band is doomed almost automatically to complete obscurity. Those few who actually feel the need for something like that can get their hands on this neatly packaged CD and let it all loose.

Since the band is no longer together, there is no manner in which to contact them. However, after the split, multi-instrumentalist Paul Kozlowski went onto form Casperous Vine. It started out as a solo project that was mostly classical-based, yet slowly evolved into a three-piece and eventually into the current incarnation as an acoustic chamber quartet. You can find Kozlowski by searching for "Casperous Vine" on Facebook. Perhaps he wouldn't mind inquiries about his long-dead grindcore/death metal/mathcore project.

Winds of Sorrow est l'une des multiples facettes de l'artiste néo-zélandais Mort et aussi l'une des plus brèves puisque seul Through Twilight... naîtra sous ce patronyme. Mort part d'un bon concept, à savoir créer un doom metal/dungeon avec une emphase sur ce dernier, mais voit trop grand en visant le format de l'album alors qu'une démo était suffisante. Les atmosphères gothiques et parfois folkloriques sont envoûtantes mais couvrent trop une voix qu'on finit par oublier. Un album sympathique. Jordan Vauvert
