⋘"Eyes Of The Golum" is taken from THE FATHOMLESS DEEP's self-titled debut album, featuring seven colossal songs of avant-garde, experimental metal the likes of which you have almost definitely never heard before. Sure, there are bands such as OPETH, SLEEPYTIME GORILLA MUSEUM, STOLEN BABIES, IDIOT FLESH, MR. BUNGLE, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, and many others who are deemed progressive in their stylistic approach to extreme music. The Fathomless Deep, however, are an entirely different entity - incorporating so many facets and aspects and elements from varying corners of the musical spectrum (NOT merely limited to heavy music) that their sound is truly indescribable. You must hear it to understand just how talented these guys are.

The song we've chosen for Mixtape 5 is in essence the "LEAST PROGRESSIVE" and least experimental track from the self-titled effort; our reasoning behind this was simple - while we wished to represent the band to a larger audience, get their name out there and get more people interested in hearing what they have to offer on a whole long player as opposed to just one track, none of the other songs were befitting for the compilation. Why? You may be asking yourselves.....well, simply put, "THE FATHOMLESS DEEP" is one of those extremely unique, rare albums, the kind of effort you almost never see in modern music anymore, let alone modern heavy metal. The concept is reminiscent of TOOL insofar as being "ART ROCK" or "ART METAL", and even though it's possible to enjoy listening to only one song and then moving onto another band, the only manner in which to GENUINELY understand and "GET" what the band has accomplished and continues to accomplish with their compositions is to hear the entire record from start to finish, no interruptions, no skipping or pausing. This is an album where you'll want to dim the lights, perhaps smoke a pipe (if you're into that sort of thing), relax and take it in with every one of your five senses, allowing the music to grasp you, clench you, and take you on an epic journey throughout space & the cosmos, within yourself; into and out of reality, until you've reached the conclusion and wonder, "WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED?"

Thus, "EYES OF THE GOLUM" is the one song we feel can stand alone for the purposes of something like a mixtape series, while still maintaining the crucial aspects of progressiveness and experimentation, melody vs. chaos. We strongly, STRONGLY urge everyone to visit THE FATHOMLESS DEEP's bandcamp site where the album can be streamed in its entirety for free and/or purchased at a low cost in any number of formats. Moreover, if you dig these guys, you'll want to hear their follow-up offering, a one-track EP that's over 14 minutes long (talk about another epic journey!!).

"Like old-school horror movie soundtracks played backwards"

The Fathomless Deep - from Helsinki, Finland - is a metal band with a taste for mixing up genres and their subgenres. The overall sound isn't just a mishmash of atonal mindfuckery, but rather, every piece of the puzzle has it's place. As a result, you'll also hear a whole lot of melody, jam-based spaciness, and atmospheric tapestries of sound-effects in addition to the overarching aggressive and dismal nature of the music.

TFD started small - a vision, and a mere two members telecommuting the material across the atlantic ocean in 2008. Since then, the band has shape shifted a great number of times before reaching its current three-piece format. Despite (or thanks to) this tumultuous background, the band has played a bunch of shows around Helsinki, released a full-length album in 2011, and an EP in 2012.

The band is currently playing and looking for gigs, as well as working on material for upcoming releases.
