about

⋘This exclusive, never-before-heard extended version of the track "Failure Saviour" by GREBER is taken from the split 7" with Proletar; released summer 2012 through Suburban White Trash Records/Selfish Satan Recordings. The version of "Failure Saviour" found on the split is the 'regular', non-extended one; the band hooked SOCIOPATHIC SOUND up with the exclusive extended version just for Volume 3 of the Mixtape Series!⋙

◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ BAND BIOGRAPHY & INFORMATION ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Perhaps some of you may remember and/or be fans of the Ontario-based experimental metal band Tugnut; their sound once described as being "a mix of heavy Mr. Bungle with a touch of Converge and a pissed off Primus vibe", or as the band described themselves "we're colorful metal". If you are aware that this band once toured extensively and consistently throughout Canada (and the U.S.), you're likely to also know they officially broke up on February 2, 2008 after six years of touring & several releases put out.

Tugnut consisted of three members, though the main guys behind the band were Marc Bourgon (also bassist of FUCK THE FACTS) & Steve Vargas (also drummer from THE GREAT SABATINI).

Well, Vargas and Bourgon might have had enough of Tugnut fame, perhaps they even became sick of playing together so often and on such a consistent basis......for a while. But, it wasn't long before the two musicians decided to form yet another experimental metal band; this time focusing more on the grindcore element.

Thus GREBER came into existence. This time around, Marc & Steve opted to remain a duo, not bringing anyone else into the fold. An intriguing dynamic sprouted roots; one bassist and one drummer, playing experimental grindcore - no guitarist necessary! Wait....what?!? Sure, there are plenty of grind bands who function perfectly well without a bassist. Hell, the best extreme metal act on the planet as far as this writer is concerned (ahem....the all mighty PIG DESTROYER for those of you unaware of my personal obsession with the destroyers of pigs!) has never written one song with a bassist involved. Guitars, though....that's a whole different story. I'd wager to say the vast majority of metal heads see the guitar as absolutely fundamental - intrinsic, even - to heavy music in general. So, what are we to make of GREBER, the guitar-less avant-garde grind band?

For one, Greber is amongst the most unique grind groups a fan of the genre will ever have the pleasure of listening to. Steve Vargas and Marc Bourgon have proven without a doubt that even the guitar is not an essential piece of equipment when it comes to writing extremely heavy music, as long as the musicians involved are innovative enough to create compositions that are not just 'functional', but actually manage to write songs which exhibit fluidity and cohesiveness.

The duo released their debut album "Hometown Heroin" on November 29, 2010 independently through Bandcamp and with it came to fruition an entirely new concept, born of creativity and shrouded in chaotic grind fury.

2011 was a year that saw the release of a brand new FUCK THE FACTS album; meanwhile, THE GREAT SABATINI was also working on new material. Thus, last year was a quiet one on the Greber-front. But, as 2012 rolled in, Greber decided it was time to unleash new material; this time in the form of a 7" split with Indonesian grind act PROLETAR. And this is where we find ourselves today; here's hoping the group continues to write new tunes during the "downtime" of their other - 'main' - bands.

(it should be noted, though, that The Great Sabatini also put out new music just last month.....though some of you may already know that based on the little "surprise" The Sociopathic Team left for you here on volume 3!)
