from Sociopathic Mixtape, Vol. 5 by Various Artists

about

⋘"Devitalize" comes from ULCER's newest effort, titled "GRANT US DEATH"; this full length features 10 blistering tracks in all and was officially released through both digital & physical media on February 18, 2013 via PULVERISED RECORDS. Additional album notes from the label's bandcamp page follow:

"Poland's morbid sextet ULCER returns this time in worship of the old-school Swedeath chainsaw laceration!

Never for a moment losing focus on the authentic Swedish fucking Death Metal sound that has terrorized the globe for decades, the band's new full-length effort "Grant Us Death" is truly an unspeakable act of zombie-invoking riffs, heavily dosed with horror-theme inspired melody lines but yet spewing forth some of the most extremely well-(de)composed filthy-as-fuck Death Metal in the recent years.

Featuring the exclusive macabre painting by Bartek Kurzok (Abigail, Demonic Slaughter, Goat Tyrant, etc) and alluring layout by Kontamination Design, "Grant Us Death" was recorded, mixed and mastered at Sinquest Sound Studio, Lublin (Blaze Of Perdition, Moon, etc) by Grzegorz Kulawiak and ULCER. "Grant Us Death" is a rotten bag filled with unpretentious D-Beats and blast beats, HM-2 buzzsaw overkill in the name of hate and misanthropy! "⋙

"The shadow cast by Entombed, Grave, Dismember and Unleashed has spread far from Sweden in recent years, with traces of that sound invading death metal scenes across the globe. Poland’s Ulcer is the most recent example to catch my attention, and with Grant Us Death they do a fine job of carrying on the tradition of those legendary bands. Ulcer pretty much sticks with the established formula for this style, but the songs are delivered with a conviction that is rare among the younger generation of Stockholm disciples.

The title track opens Grant us Death with a brief acoustic passage that quickly gives way to the thick, distorted guitar sound that defines this type of death metal. The song builds to a frantic pace before dropping into a savage mid-paced break down. The change in tempo is enhanced by simple but well placed lead guitar, introducing a theme that is repeated on several songs. It reminds me of some of the transitions on Entombed’s Clandestine album, and the overall feel of Grant us Death is rather similar to the frantic, sinister vibe that Entombed so masterfully captured on that album. Ulcer employs two vocalists, and the traditional guttural death metal style that dominates that album is accompanied by an assortment of cleaner yells, grunts and screams. You can hear what I believe are trade-offs between both vocalist in most of the songs, but the growls are so similar that it could just be one of them using a slightly different inflection. “Thanatoeuphoria” and “The Love Song” both make good use of the different vocals styles that are present on Grant us Death. The album boasts a massive sound, with the guitars up front and extra beefy. It’s the classic Stockholm sound for sure, but there is a slight modern edge and a little extra punch to it. It works well here, allowing each riff to jump out and hit the listener with maximum impact.

This album is just loaded with classic death metal riffs, and Ulcer does a great job of using those riffs to create songs that are better and more unique than the sum of their parts. Up to this point, Grant us Death has been my go-to death metal album for this particular sound this year. It’s really good, and when all is said and done it will probably be one of the three or four albums with this sound that earn a lasting place in my collection this year. Grant us Death isn’t a transcendent album, but Ulcer got pretty much everything right here, and they are more than one step ahead of the pack."
