Hate - Poor Choice

from Sociopathic Mixtape, Vol. 5 by Various Artists

/

about

⋘The track "Poor Choice" was originally released by Chicago's HATE (not to be confused with the other 3,123 metal groups by that title) as the third official demo - aptly titled 'Demo III' (Demo I & Demo II, unsurprisingly, were the titles of the others); their entire back catalogue of demos came out throughout the year 2008 and put the band on the Chicago metal scene radar.

"Poor Choice" was also part of the "Demo Collection", a self-released compilation/anthology (burnt onto CD-R) containing remastered versions of nine original demos. The CD-R version was made available through the band in 2009 in physical format only.

The version of "Poor Choice" offered here on Sociopathic Mixtape, Vol. 5 comes from the band's most recent release - The Demo Collection 12" (vinyl LP), put out via VANTHRAX RECORDS on March 2, 2013. Though titled the same as the 2009 CD-R, the vinyl edition contains eight of the band's original demo tracks; "Where's Your War" is the ninth & final song on the CD version, and it is the song cut from the vinyl edition.

NOTE: the LP is limited to 133 pressings on black vinyl, and there's a link in the appropriate section below to a site which still has some available for purchase, grab them now before they're gone for good!

In conjunction with the LP release, HATE also uploaded the album onto their Bandcamp page (link below), where fans can opt to grab the entire record (as well as two splits) for "Name Your Own Price".⋙

◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ BAND BIOGRAPHY & INFORMATION ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

HATE hail from the urban wasteland of northern chicago and play a scathing mutilation of hardcore, sludge, and blackened crust that might bring to mind the metallic discord of bands as varied as RORSHACH or THOU, or might just make you really pissed off.

Not much is known about these Chicago grinders; of course, having the word 'hate' in your band name is one way to either get lost in the seemingly endless mess of acts with similar monikers, or to perhaps remain anonymous in a rather ingenius way; who knows?

Regardless of all else, what's most important is always the band's music, and fucking hell do these guys know how to play fast, angry, brutal, tight, and extremely extreme metal. Some of the more prevalent styles heard within their sound include blackened grind/crust, hardcore, sludge, doom, death metal, and powerviolence (as you listen to more of their music closely, you'll hear elements of even more subgenres, making for a very unique sound to make up for a rather generic name - the latter being the only criticism of the group I can come up with). Each member is masterful at their instrument, and collectively the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts!

It's a shame the band doesn't make themselves more available, or at least a bit easier to find; but in all likelihood, this level of obscurity is exactly what they want. Keep your eyes out for developments involving this awesome band; a diamond in the rough of a large Chicago metal scene - you'll probably do best by sticking to their bandcamp page.
